Obverse
Sacagawea (1788-1812), a Shoshone woman who served as interpreter/guide for the Lewis and Clark Expedition, with a child in her arms.
Inscription: LIBERTY / IN GOD / WE TRUST / GG
Reverse
The Hiawatha Belt with five arrows bound together symbolising unity, with the inscription "Haudenosaunee" - the name the Iroquois Confederacy uses for itself, meaning "people of the longhouse". Along the bottom edge of the reverse is "Great Law of Peace" (the English translation of Gayanashagowa, the Iroquois Confederacy's constitution), which served as a model for the United States Constitution. The four links of the belt symbolise four of the five nations of the Iroquois Confederacy - Mohawk, Oneida, Cayuga and Seneca - while the eastern white pine in the centre represents the fifth nation, Onondaga, and depicts the Tree of Peace.
Inscription: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA / $1 / TC / CLV / HAUDENOSAUNEE / GREAT LAW OF PEACE
