Obverse
Left-profile portrait of Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President of the United States (1801-1809), surrounded by "LIBERTY" and the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST", with the engraver's initials below the portrait.
Reverse
In the centre, a rendition of the reverse of the original Indian Peace Medal designed for Jefferson and used by Lewis and Clark during their expedition: beneath a tomahawk and a peace pipe, two clasped hands - on the left a US soldier's, on the right a Native American's, wearing a silver armband decorated with an American eagle.
